#FloridaToday article on Making Brevard a Better Place: #321Millennials‘ #ShaneBurgman, Executive Director. The #CoreValues of this AWESOME organization are #Culture, #Charity, and #Connection. Read on and #ShareThisStory
In the summer of 2011 I received orders to report to Naval Ordnance Test Unit (NOTU) in Cape Canaveral. It had been nearly six years since I had the luxury of calling a place “home,” something most people take for granted. My first week in Brevard, all of that changed. I finally found a place that I wanted to plant my roots, contribute my time to, and call home.
After separating from the Navy in 2015, I discovered there was a demand for a young professional group that was able to work and think outside of the traditional “networking” organizational box. We needed an organization that did not have a political hold on the who/what/when/why/how they can contribute to and partner with. This was the birth of 321Millennials (321M).
321M’s number one priority is the community of Brevard, with personal and business goals secondary. Our core values are, and always will be, to facilitate growth, influence, and prosperity within our community. These core values are powered by a three tier system within the organization; Culture, Charity, and Connection.
Enhancing culture is something the majority of our members have expressed interest in, so we have used their feedback to help drive the 321M Culture engine. This can be anything from organizing an awareness campaign with Bridges for an upcoming art exhibit to working with the Economic Development Commission (EDC) helping to attract talented young professionals to our area, both of which we have done.
Brevard has a robust number of charities and some do not have the financial nor skilled means to get the assistance required to help spread the word; this is where 321M’s Charity leg comes in. We allow our members to present nonprofits and other philanthropic events to the group and based on interest within the group and adherence to our core values, we execute our plan. Whether we organize an event where 100 percent of the proceeds benefit the Brevard Achievement Center or create an awareness campaign resulting in growth for an upcoming charitable event like Coloring the Causeway, we have the means and talent to make things happen.
Realizing that Brevard had such a large number of like minded individuals, we determined that it was necessary to create a platform where we can all get together and “let our hair down”; this is the Connect leg, which is open to everyone, millennial or not. This was created to facilitate what most individuals refer to as “networking.” We host socials throughout the county and other events that offer an opportunity to meet Brevard’s rising professionals.
Additionally, as an extra layer of value, 321M has included a membership structure. This is the only portion of 321M that has an application process and membership fees. As a result, members are granted access to two exclusive meetings per month, discounts to our events, a profile within our website, featured in our bi-monthly newsletter, plus a plethora of other benefits. When you find the perfect balance of mission, leadership, and passion, things happen. 321M’s birth was a result of our collective love for Brevard and will continue to be our driving force. Here’s to 2018!
